While the rest of the world celebrates love with red roses and boxes of chocolate, Lebanon remembers one of its own who was taken away by murderous hands two years ago today.
Like all things Lebanese, today's memorial will be marred with political speeches by our esteemed leaders who will choose once again to turn their backs on those who oppose them and instead, present their case to those who have already pledged their allegiance: a sure way to deepen the rift by basking in the support of your followers, alienating your opponents, and closing your mind to the fact that anything short of a consensus on the major issues of this country today will surely put us on a road we do not want to take.
But there are worse things than political speeches. There's no need to describe them, as they are still fresh in our minds from the horrible events of yesterday and those from three weeks ago.
Today, all eyes are on Lebanon as it stands once again upon the edge of a knife. While the rest of the world celebrates their love for one another, let us also use this day to celebrate the only thing we have in common, our love for our country. So stand on the edge of a knife if you have to, but stand together. United, peaceful and proud.
