The ugly can achieve an absoluteness beyond the reach of beauty.

2008.02.21
"I love it when ugliness is beautiful. I love character flaws."
Marcia Gay Harden

"Like a gold ring in a pig's snout is a beautiful woman who shows no discretion."
Proverbs 11:22

"Ugliness without tact is horrible."
Nathaniel Hawthorne

“Growth begins when we begin to accept our own weakness”

Jean Vanier

"I think everybody has brokenness. There's no doubt about that. We live in a fallen world. This is not heaven. Everybody has scars. Everybody is hurting somewhere, I guarantee you that. Everyone has a hidden hurt." Rick Warren

"Ugliness is in a way superior to beauty because it lasts."
Serge Gainsbourg

I am not saying that these things are 'ugly' in the sense of being hideous--but a cone is not as beautiful as a rose, a ripped leaf not as abundant as a whole leaf, a clover not as pretty as a well formed daisy with creamy white petals.

Nature provides 'second cousins' in order to enhance what we humans consider beautiful. Life is full of contrasts--light and dark, good and evil, beautiful and ugly. At least on the physical plane. On the spiritual? Well I have met what I consider 'ugly' people who bloom into roses as I speak to them. And I have met 'beautiful' people who open their mouths and become ugliness personified.

George Sand (female author) was celebrated not only for her talent but her ugliness--yet it is said she had many lovers. Marilyn Monroe (considered the twentieth century sex icon) never found what she was looking for. Sad isn't it? Or maybe it is a lesson that skin is skin and we are not always the sum of our parts.

signsnwonders I agree very much with the thoughts in this post and the photos certainly are not 'ugly' in any sense. If the forest were full of perfect trees and the world was full of perfect people...it would be too boring for words..it would be truly ugly! Great set.

onepicaday Ugliness and beauty belong together. They are in fact no contrasts, they are the two ends of a spectrum, a scale with an uncountable amount of intermediates...
thanks for this posting!
