My Trip to Dallas Texas Part One: Wildflowers

2008.05.10
"Where flowers bloom so does hope."
Lady Bird Johnson

These grew in bunches with thick stems which bled white, sticky milk. Anyone out there in Texas know what these are named?
Note: Thanks to NCshutterbug we have an answer! They are called Antelope Horns.

I will be the gladdest thing under the sun!
I will touch a hundred flowers
And not pick one.
- Edna St. Vincent Millay

“Every time I see the flowers blooming along the highways of America, I think of her.” Reverend Billy Graham, family friend, delivered the invocation at the dedication of the LBJ Library and Museum and presided over President Johnson’s burial service

“She lit a fire in this country that still burns." George B. Hartzog, Jr., former Director of the National Park Service

As delicate as moth wings--I'm not kidding! Straight from a field.

Johnson, Lady Bird,1912–2007
As first lady (1963–69) she sponsored environmental causes and national beautification projects and later co-founded (1982) what is now the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, Austin, Tex.

Thank you Lady Bird!

I was in Dallas last week to pick up our son from college--we had a fantastic time. I ignorantly thought of Texas a one big tumble weed with dust cyclones. Too much mid west Wizard of Oz thinking. Instead we found the greenest, lushest scenery and gorgeous wildflowers that grew everywhere. Someone told me Lady Bird Johnson was responsible for that! Here are a sample from that trip. Enjoy! More pics to come.

ncshutterbug Great set! The flowers in #2 are Antelope Horns. The flowers in #4 were a favorite when I was a kid (aside from the bluebonnets). We used to rub the centers on each other's nose - they left them all yellow. :)
