lucas is 8 (going on 9 in October) He has wanted a dog since he was old enough to think about it. Since I was Lucas' Emergency Gramma (babysitter), Mom decided that if he learned how to take care of zoe, one day he would get his own dog. Meanwhile, ztwd would train him in doggy care.
So from the time he was old enough to hold a leash, Lucas tried to control ztwd... which was difficult when he was 5 but became increasingly easier as he grew older. There were many scraped knees encountered when zoe would take off, with Lucas hanging onto the leash for dear life, determined not to let go! l Last year he finally achieved full control, and every evening before dinner there would be a knock on my door. Lucas and zoe and I would go down to the doggy park/playground where all the other dog owners would gather to watch their dogs play. Lucas was the only kid there. He knew all the dogs by name, and had his favorites...Gracie, the bull dog, Billie the Brussels Griffin and Louie the puggle. Lucas learned how to lower his voice and use firm commands. He learned to pick up poop... a hard thing for a kid to do. He leaned how to 'read' zoe's moods and understood her various barks. He overcame his fear of the big dogs..the great dane and the two Newfoundland dogs...but he still couldnt get a dog of his own, because they were in a rental that didn't allow pets. So he satisfied himself with Mojo, the guinea pig, and being zoe's 'emergency kid' But zoe is pretty old, and not up to a nine year old's play demands. Well one day, they moved... they bought a house and left the neighbourhood. zoe and i both missed him very much. One day I was on craigslist and i saw an ad for a young chocolate lab that needed rehoming. I sent them the information and they called, they visited the dog, and it was love at first sight for all involved. That was a week ago. I had a shitty day at the market today. I stopped at the supermarket for a pint of ice cream to drown my sorrows in, and lo and behold, there they were... They had been to the beach to 'try out' the new dog in the ocean, and it was a fantastic success, with Taiko swimming and retrieving and swimming and retrieving and swimming and retrieving as only a chocolate lab can do. The boy had found HIS dog. |
And for the doggy nose aficionados amongst us... i spent ten minutes of photos capturing a perfect chocolate lab doggy nose.....

Fantastic story! All the best to Lucas and Taiko. Cass says to tell Taiko that rehoming works out really well. Excellent job on the choco-lab-nose.
