TT Session! KK Style!

2008.12.23
The group photo. The gang of merry men, and women!

TWO Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX II DG Macro HSM, 1 Sony Alpha A900 and 1 Sony Carl Zeiss 24-70mm F2.8 SSM!!! Ladies and Gentlemen, you are looking at RM20k worth of equipment in this photo alone! *faints*

One seriously poisoned kick-ass lady photographer! LOL

We had a very nice and simple TT session at OLDE STATION, City Mall among Sony Alpha users here in Kota Kinabalu. It was fun because we have a multitude of cameras, flashes and lenses to play with. The big attraction, was of course the A900 & Carl Zeiss 24-70mm F2.8 SSM lens combination! The first ever Sony full frame camera with built in image stabilizer (which Sony dubbed Steady Shot).

kysham AlphaLover: *Yawn* Please do not be a fanboy and pollute my photoblog with your pointless remarks. You are obviously a troll and perhaps have a personal agenda with me. You can either be a man and confront me directly or go and hide somewhere else. You are not welcomed here.

Eric hi, how does the Sigma 70-200mm HSM AF compared to the Sony 24-70mm SSM AF? HSM comparable to SSM?
Eric · 2009-02-09: 22:53
kysham Eric, yes, the Sigma's HSM is comparable to the Sony's SSM in terms of function. But I'm not too sure which is better in terms of performance though...

Eric Great, thats a piece of gd news. I have a friend keep on saying Sigma HSM lens for A-mount do not have HSM function. Meaning it AF like a normal lens. Now at least i see user with this lens. So hows the IQ? Its a rare sight to see 2 Sigma 70-200mm HSM sideby side. haha.
Eric · 2009-02-10: 04:36
kysham Got lah, Sigma got produce HSM version lenses for Sony lah. I have a walking living proof of this in my hands. :D IQ of this lens is pretty good. No complains so far, given the price and features set.

yktan9 bro, is it possible that the AF speed is faster due to the motor of A900/A700?

Just wanna double confirm that it's really HSM.

Or in other words, would a non-HSM sigma lens be considerably slower on A900?

Thx in advance bro.

kysham yktan9, my personal opinion is that HSM do not necessary mean faster AF. It does mean smoother and quieter focusing though. So the answer to your question (in my opinion) is that NO, a non-HSM do not necessarily focuses slower than a HSM equipped lens. However, I said not necessarily, doesn't mean a definite answer. And I think in the case of a 70-200 f2.8 lens, there may be some truth to this myth because this particular class of lens do have some seriously heavy glasses to move around during focusing, so a lens driven by a weak AF motor may be really slower than a HSM driven lens. No way to tell, but the logics do point towards that direction. :)
