A cold experiment

2008.01.21
It was 5° out today, so I decided to see how long it would take water to freeze outside. Here's the water at 6:30.

I decided to try two separate containers, for no particular reason.

Ok, now it's 7:10 and this bottle is just starting to form ice on the top.

7:30

7:50 and this one has a whole layer of ice across the top.

8:10 and it's got a pretty thick layer now.

9:00 and this one finally has a thicker layer.

10:45 and you can see the layer is pretty thick now.

This one is nearly frozen solid.

I have no idea why the mayonnaise container froze so much faster than the juice bottle. More water surface area? I was really surprised, though, at how long it took to freeze. Being 5°, I thought it would freeze faster than it did.

I finally had to go to bed at 11:00 when the juice bottle still wasn't frozen through. I would've started the experiment earlier if I'd known it would take so long!

Beagles3 Maybe the staight sides of the Mayo container had something to do with the uninterrupted surface area and freezer at a faster rate. *whew* that took up all the extra brain cells I had to spare today!!!
