Hawksbill Crag

2010.03.06

Brenda (djnana) with her walking stick on the trail, marked by the red-orange triange on the tree.

The Buffalo River was some 1,500 feet below the ridge we were hiking.
pixel
Most parts of the trail was pretty easy to distinguish.

Go RIGHT around this boulder - there IS NOTHING to the left!
pixel
Hawksbill Crag - 150 feet straight down into the trees - 1,500 feet down to the river below!

Brenda, sitting on the mostly flat surface atop Hawksbill Crag.

A bolder Brenda standing up (notice how FAR she is from the edge)!

Last Thursday Brenda and I drove to a remote area of Buffalo River National Park (a protected wilderness area) to the trailhead of a 1 1/2 mile hiking trail to Hawksbill Crag.
It took us just under 2 hours to make the 3 mile round trip, and we hiked up and down the mountains, often on trails that were a matter of inches from the edge of cliffs where a slip would mean probable death.
Even in the dead of winter, the rocks, trees, and views were spectacular. We will definitely come here again in the spring and fall when the trees add their brilliance to the landscape.

lynnsgallery2 UNBELIEVABLE!!! I don't think I would out as far as Brenda was...to scary for me but it certainly made for some FANTASTIC shots!!! I really love this post :))

djnana You should be so proud of me because I said I wouldn't crawl out there on my hands and knees for a million dollars, much less stand up! To quote John Denver: "Far out (and down), Man!"
djnana · 2010-03-05: 22:48
365edgar Yes!!! Far out (and down), man! (rest his soul) I so need to take myself a road trip and visit this spot. I am usually the guy sitting on the edge of such a precipice with his feet dangling over the edge all the while singing John Denver songs at the top of his lungs. This is a beautiful set, Larry. Well done!

SunFlower1990 Fantastic shots! I wouldn't be going out there myself but Brenda is brave.

critterbug Great pictures! What a terrific view, the "craig" is an Ozark landmark that I've yet to visit and this looks like a good time to do it (while the ticks & chiggers are still asleep).

skskz Great photos. I think it's spectacular place and she is brave! I'm expecting photos in other seasons...!!!
skskz · 2010-03-06: 08:49
tennischick Great shots! It's amazing what the addition of a person can do for the perspective of the shot. I didn't realize the magnitude of the Crag until Brenda was brave enough to pose on it!
tennischick · 2010-03-06: 09:39
urmysunshine what a cool place!~ It's wierd you say the dead of winter but there's no snow; such a difference from snowy ne; I like the shot of Brenda sitting
urmysunshine · 2010-03-06: 10:09
MoMac OH My goodness !!! Brave Brenda , the last three are impressive , not sure if you would get me standing there .
My younger brother keeps sending me "scary" photos like this of him on tops of mountains.
Reminds me of the cartoon roadrunner and cayote was it?
MoMac · 2010-03-06: 10:28
NellyBly Beautiful Brenda and scenery! Love the one of her standing on the Crag...I'll get a little too close to an edge and Don will make me step back..Love these shots, I want to go there next time we travel through Arkansas!

mystic1 Wow what unbelievable shots, what a fantastic place for a hike, looking forward when the trails around here are not so waterlogged :)

kellybee322 Wonderful set! Really gave the impression of the scope of the place. Brenda certainly was brave!!
kellybee322 · 2010-03-07: 16:51
Jarvo Fabulous set Larry. That scenery is absolutely stunning. I think Brenda is very brave. You'd never get my wife anywhere near that overhanging rock.
Jarvo · 2010-03-07: 20:14
jtnelso When we go, we'll have to find Tim Ernst's personal trail between his house and the Crag. It's only a 15 minute hike. We can stop by and say hello. :)

hannamagnusson Looks like a lovely hike in those beautiful surroundings :-)

rsnelson0984 Love the hawksbill. Just spent four years writing the novel. The Hawksbill Crag. You can see photo and a bit about the 1865 story on the website. www.thehawksbillcrag.com
