Mass Observation - Trash

2010.11.01
pixel
Compacted used cardboard boxes will be recycled.

For my non-English reading PB friends, the sign says, "Adopt A Highway Litter Control - Next 1 mile Mountain Home Rotary Club."
Two or three times a year, members of our club walk down the sides of the road for this mile, and pick up trash.
pixel
Last Saturday morning, eight members of the Rotary Club spent an hour picking up trash along the highway.
pixel
Here is some of the "treasure" we found along the way.
pixel
If you look closely, you can see three orange trash bags in this photo (there's a fourth one behind that truck). We leave them there, and notify the state highway department that we've worked our stretch of road, and they'll send a truck Monday to pick up our bags of trash.
pixel
These are a couple of examples of how we handle large and smaller amounts of trash.
Walmart, the world's largest retailer, collects and recycles the cardboard boxes that contained merchandise, and different groups "adopt" sections of the highway to pick up litter from time to time.

More Mass Observation Photos are here.

djnana Great explanation through photography of the "Adopt-a-Highway" projects across the USA. (That is not my Princess Leia hair-do in the third shot - those are earmuffs! It was 40 degrees that morning!)

Jarvo That looks like a great scheme Larry. It's good to see that someone seems to be getting it right. This afternoon I visited a school not far from here where Ben was playing football (soccer). I was horrified at the junk that was strewn all over their sports field - it was as if nobody cared at all. Thanks for restoring my faith in humanity a little.

HoosierAtHeART Good for Brenda and you!
But, you put a big smile : ) on my face! I am wondering how our non-english friends are going to read your words underneath the 2nd pic? : )

SADHYA This is great. In our little seaside village we have a couple of people who regularly walk along the beach and pick up rubbish. There is also a youth group who clean up the river a couple of times a year. My patch that I try and keep clean and tidy is the local woods. Its amazing what people deliberately leave behind in the woods. Its strange - they go into the woods because it is beautiful, and then mess it up for people who will come later.

LAZYWASP A wonderful example of community....shame you have to do it at all!

lookagain "Adopt a Highway" is truly a great initiative. Pretty sure all the states participate in some way. Great story on a solution to a problem, Larry!

DancingDolphin I think "adopt a highway" is one of the best things to happen to this country! Seriously, no matter where you go, you see these signs. And just like your bags shown here, I often see people at work cleaning up or the bags ready for collection. Just imagine if all that trash was still just laying around along side our roads! I don't know for a fact but would suspect that over the years as more people become 'educated', less and less trash will need picked up along roadways. Good for your organization for participating!

karmankwarner Very Nice....at first I thought you were making a statement about Wal-Mart being rubbish...I am glad that was only for a second...and that they recycle.

ArtBee It's not trash anymore! Recycled reused! It is suprising how much trash is thrown along the highways though! Great job the Rotary is doing as well as you and Brenda! Great post!

paintbox I'm sorrym, I'm laughing at #2. I applaud you for your work picking up trash that other people so carelessly toss out.
