To Polarize or Not To Polarize

2011.01.23
pixel
Using a polarizing filter.
pixel
Without a polarizing filter.
pixel
Both photos were taken moments apart. The polarizing filter blocks the reflection to deepen the colors, but without the filter, the ripples in the water emphasize the action more.
I suppose using the filter or not depends on what you, as the creator of the photograph, are trying to convey in the image.

HoosierAtHeART Was it a warming polarizer? I like the colors better in #2 But in #1 with the polarizer I like that we can see the rocks better under the water!

djnana Wow, what a remarkable difference! And a great exercise for us to contrast! You gotta get me one of those!!
djnana · 2011-01-23: 19:44
danrav Larry, I agree with your thoughts. However, I sort of like the almost "illusion" of the bubbles suspended on air in that the water surface is absent! Cool effect & nice color also.
danrav · 2011-01-23: 20:08
RayNvb Great demonstration. I use my filter a lot in the summer. Sometimes incorrectly!
RayNvb · 2011-01-23: 23:02
Yokai I prefer #1 !! No matter which photography type we opt for, I think the polarizer will become indispensable...
Yokai · 2011-01-24: 00:23
jennye without for me too.
jennye · 2011-01-24: 03:23
hannamagnusson I like the colours of the first and the reflections of the second. Is it possible to combine?
hannamagnusson · 2011-01-24: 04:27

lookagain Nice lesson on the polarizing filter...and perfect illustrations with the shots!
lookagain · 2011-01-27: 19:08
ArtBee I like the image better without the filter. The polarizing filter give better results in brighter places. It's nice to see both shots for a comparison.

karmankwarner How special. I agree with you that the image that you are searching for creating would be the determination of filters...
