I almost killed an intern today...

2008.07.09

This morning, one of our interns asked if I was going to use the truck to go anywhere and I said no. He said he needed to run to Hancock, so I asked him to drop some equipment off at one of my projects that was on the way so I wouldn't have to run later. After giving exchanging some light-hearted tough talking, he finally gave in all in the name of 'efficiency.' About 15 minutes before our staff meeting, our president's executive assistant stopped me in the hallway and asked if I had heard about Andrew and I said no. She said he had been in an accident. Great. I asked if he was okay and she said she thought so, but our president and safety manager were on their way to go get him and find out what was going on. Turns out, a girl going the opposite direction had leaned down to fix her sandle, swerved into his lane, so he swerved to avoid her. She swerved too far into the shoulder, so swerved back towards him and hit him almost head on. Luckily they both had their safety belts on, but he's got some major welts around his waist and has a sore hand which hit the dashboard. 3 hours after I sent him on that little trip, he was standing back at my desk telling me I owed him lunch.

Yeah, I've felt bad all day. But one of the other interns started giving me some crap, so I told him if he wasn't careful, I'd make him run an errand for me. That's now the joke around the office. That and the requirements for interns hired to help me must not have a fear of death...

And the funny part? Our mechanics had just finished fixing the truck which had just hit a deer... It had gotten a new paint job, detailed, and donned the new logo... Now it's totaled...

Photo is compliments of our safety manager... And the local newspaper which was on the scene... Yeah, there's not a whole lot of news up here...

mowestlan You'd better tell the owners to carry hazard insurance on anyone with whom you might make contact in the company! I'm so glad he's okay (and it sounds like the other driver is too). I'll bet she'll never try to fix her sandal while driving again!
