The situation in Egypt is terrible. On the one hand they have dissident religious extremists, and on the other a mediocre government severely cracked in its foundations. These two opposing forces form the walls of a human meat grinder in which innocent children get caught up. What they really need is a competent government, a set of competing moderate political parties and a few decades of hard work. Then some of this poverty would finally subside. But it doesn't look like it's going to happen any time soon, so I dread the answer to your question. The little boy in the first photo isn't just sad like any other little boy; he looks like he's sad because he knows what situation he's in. It's just tragic beyond words.
