The Fawn

2010.06.21
pixel
Mama doe "hid" her baby in my neighbor's yard. The fawn was as still as could be as I was shooting and didn't appear to be frightened or I would have backed off. Read below to see where Mama was.

Fawn fur.

"It is not uncommon to find young fawns lying alone in a field or even your front yard. The fawn may appear to be orphaned, but it is not. Mother deer settle their fawns into quiet areas and leave them. Later, she comes back to her baby. The mother does not stay with the fawn because she doesn't want to draw predators to it, but she is close by."
- excerpt from eHow.com

There was some question however, how well Mama was watching. Apparently, a couple neighbors found the tiny newborn in the middle of the street. When they called the authorities to ask what to do they were told to wrap it in a blanket and place it by the side of the road....which they did.

djnana These are so cute I can hardly stand it. I want to put them all in my favorites (and I might!). I don't know how close you were, but the shots today and yesterday are simply fantastic. I think I like #2 & 4 the best here because of the incredible detail in both. Wonderful job, Marsha!

And thanks so much for ALL the great comments on my travel posts - so happy you liked them!

DancingDolphin These are wonderful!! So did the mama come back for it?? I have a friend who retired from the DNR and he says if you touch the fawn you've signed it's death warrant... so I'm curious.
DancingDolphin · 2010-06-22: 08:15

juliacrowe Beautiful photos! I've not seen deer close up like this since feeding them by hand at a deer-feeding farm in the Wisconsin Dells a loooooooong time ago. Not the same--this baby you found is truly in the wilds.
juliacrowe · 2010-06-22: 15:35
NellyBly Awwww, #2 is so precious! Did the mom come back for it? I've seen newborn calves but not a fawn..thanks!

SheriJ How sweet!! Lucky you!! Also fawns do not have a scent for the first 3 days of their lives so predators have a harder time finding them so they are drawn to mama instead!!
SheriJ · 2010-06-23: 23:48
