Some "Deer" Friends Came to Visit

2011.01.04
pixel
In the middle of a snow storm the other day I looked out the back window to see snow-covered deer ears. The same three does had visited weeks before and had surprised me as I stood on the deck. They just jumped the fence and walked straight over toward the house as pretty as you please with that look in their eyes, "where's the food?" This was uncommon behavior for deer, and here it had happened once again! So with the snow adding some interest, I grabbed a bag of stale corn chips and my camera and began shooting deer.
pixel
Normally, I'd never get this close to a doe. They can be aggressive and hurt you badly with their hooves if they attack. I was several feet above her with a sturdy deck rail between us.
pixel
I'd chased them away by stomping on the deck at one point, and they went to the neighbors' yard. However, I was ready for fence-jumpers in case they came back....which they did!
pixel
I believe this young-un might have been one of the fawns I shot last spring.
pixel
pixel
We never feed deer...but this was a "special" occasion so I relented. It was obvious by their behavior though that someone's been feeding them regularly. Usually our neighborhood deer never come towards you....but instead keep a safe distance.
pixel
Goodbye, "deer" friends, come again some day!

????? Yeah, these "deer friends" are really striking! Very impressive photos! So fabulous!

redro I'm glad you don't follow blindly the rules Marsha.
I know it's not good to feed wild animals because they should keep away from populated places, but in special situations like snow storms when they can't find anything to eat people should act in a way to save them not to condemn them to starvation, even if that means to bend the law...What's more important after all ? If you don't do it regularly it will be the best compromise.
How could somebody say NO to the face in #2 :) ??? !
This is a very special post. Great pictures and story.

darfoster Amazing shots, Marsha! You are so lucky to live in an area where these wonderful animals and others come right up to your house! I know they can be a nuisance eating plants in the summer, but for them, I don't think I'd care! Hard to pick a favorite, but I think I'll put #4 into my favs!
darfoster · 2011-01-04: 19:20

And I never knew that deer like stale corn chips... thanks for the tip. Now I know what to bring with me when I next go deer-hunting in the forest. I just hope familiarity breeds corn-tempt !

Jannie They are gorgeous. Great captures, all of them, but especially the shot of the fence jumper! We get deer every day foraging in our deer feeder, I mean compost pile!! We have 2 sets of twins right now and 5 babies total. The mamas were born and raised here too. I love to watch them year after year.
