Month in Mantiou: Walk with Me through Manitou Springs

Manitou Springs has changed a great deal since the 70's when my friend (lifeisgood) and I used to hang out there. At that time it was a huge hippie haven but during the summer months plenty of tourists were seen there as well. There are still some hippies in Manitou but now the pendulum's swung to being mainly a thriving tourist destination. The hippie spirit remains, however, as the mood of the town leans toward tolerance and acceptance in the midst of its wackiness and weirdness. In fact the unofficial slogan of the town is "Keep Manitou Weird" and on Facebook the account by that name has this to say about the town: "Manitou Springs is a unique town, characterized by a level of creativity and individuality that no other town embodies. "Keep Manitou Weird" moves beyond a mere slogan to reflect all things that make Manitou Springs unique. Local businesses, artists, and residents collectively contribute to our town's colorful image."
