Waiting for a Train

2011.09.18

Anyone waiting for a train along this track will be waiting for a long time! Shots taken of unused tracks, bridge and tunnel a few miles outside of Buena Vista, Colorado.

Three short tunnels were carved out of the mountainside in the 1800s to make way for this first railroad line running along the Arkansas River. The rail bed is now a road which runs parallel to the tracks you see above. Many counties in Colorado are turning these old railway beds into hiking and biking trails....I love it!

"And there is the headlight, shining far down the track, glinting off the steel rails that, like all parallel lines, will meet in infinity, which is after all where this train is going."

jennyLit great set! i love this because when we were kids my dad would take us to old train tracks so we could flatten coins on the rails (not the safest thing ever haha) but it is a fond memory of mine:)

RayNvb Great perspective! I see my home state of Virginia manufactured the bridge. I wonder if that company is still in existence?
RayNvb · 2011-09-18: 10:15
ArtBee What a wonderful series Felecia! Brings back fond memories of my childhood daydreams of hopping a train for an adventure to who knows where......
Lovely angles and perspectives in your shots. I envision an old steam engine blowing it's whistle and chugging along with it's billowing puffs of smoke and loud train wheels pounding the rails......
When photos bring out those kind of visions and emotions. I believe you have presented what photography is all about!

????? ...they put me off in Texas, a state I dearly love
The wide open spaces around me, the moon and stars up above
Nobody seems to want me, or lend me a helping hand
I am on my way from 'frisco, I am going to dixieland
Though my pocketbook is empty, and my heart is full of pain
I am a thousand miles away from home just waiting for a train...
Jimmie Rodgers

Lovely 'look again' set

danrav This is a magical set fopr me Marsha! I grew up only a block or so from the railroad tracks. It was a great place to play and do crazy things. You have captured exactly how I see these in my mind;s eye from childhood! (Minus the mountains of course) There is nothing more mysterious than an abandoned railraod track!!!!
danrav · 2011-09-18: 20:42
danrav BTW - #5 to my faves!!!! Just like the bridge I fished under as a kid!
danrav · 2011-09-18: 20:42
