Self portrait

2009.03.28

From the last post you will recall that I had one image too warm and one too cold. I changed the gel on the front light for a lighter one and then had a go at taking my own photograph. My model was busy with a good book!

For me, other than they are my ugly mug and apologies for not shaving first, I think they are getting closer to what I was after.

Ok did you guess how I put the shadow pattern on the back wall? Well this time I used an empty laundry basket. I have put a shot up of the set up for you to see. When I took the first couple of shots the blue light from behind me was contaminating the light from the front. To get around this I put a snoot on the blue light for greater control.

gombi67 Very interesting the portrait was the background of a photo, a superb series!

pattyb Really nice lighting Dave. Thanks so much for showing us your 'set-up'. I was thinking the pattern was reflecting from a window or something. I never would have guessed a laundry basket! Very creative!

Cherax Yes, I'm working my way through the Strobist stories too, and by chance one where he uses this technique. Here you've put your own unique slant on it, and the effect looks a bit like something out of Spiderman.
He called it a coolie (if I got that right), or something - short for another word I don't recignise. What a good way to jazz up a dull background.
