Greenland from above

2008.11.08
the south part of Greenland

'Greenland was also called Gruntland ("Ground-land") and Engronelant (or Engroneland) on early maps. Whether green is an erroneous transcription of grunt ("ground"), which refers to shallow bays, or vice versa, is not known.
It should also be noted, however, that the southern portion of Greenland (not covered by glacier) is indeed very green in the summer.

Continuous ice sheet covers 84% of the country; the rest is permafrost.
The Greenland ice sheet is three km thick and broad enough to blanket an area the size of Mexico. The ice is so massive that its weight presses the bedrock of Greenland below sea level.'

P.S. I am sorry for the quality of these shots;
The porthole was not to clean :D
