a head shot is a photographic technique where the focus of the photograph is a person's face, but it is not the same as a portrait. a portrait will often "portray" the person by including elements of his life, such as his work, interest, etc. meanwhile, headshot is an image that portrays people as they are, more of a “mug shot” or some kind of an identification
as a matter of fact, i do not have the slightest idea who is that guy on the photo. maybe a tourist, maybe a local resident of the city where i live. he was supposed to notice my preparation when taking a picture of that bust behind the fence. not telling a word he jumped between the camera and the fence with an emotionless face. in spite of the short distance my macro lens could focus, i exposed. it is possible that i said “thank you” when he left, but i am not sure

Wow, thank you so much for differentiating. I had no idea. I thought any photo of a person was a portrait. Love that second shot.

a "head shot" in my world is a direct shot to the head, i.e. an instant kill. it is even an achievement on the statistics page of some 3D-shooter games i have been playing, though i must say, i never understood the arithmetic behind it (it has something to do with being able to execute your enemy with just one, very precise action. i wonder why they call a photographic portrait something as gruesome as a "shot" anyway. this guy, who pushed himself into your line of fire, may have wanted to make a statement.

ha ha, nice, when I shot photographs people usually feel awkward or don't want to be in the shooting distance :) maybe my appearance scares them away :)
