in may 2oo9 my pc hard drive suddenly crashed. it contained the only copies of all my shots that i took from january. after my first (shameful) reaction the second one was more constructive. i tried to save the files from this dead drive. in the expert shop nearby they could not do anything. then Steve a friend, offered his help. he can build a plane from scratch, so it was not too surprising that he succeeded to save several .pdf and .doc files from the drive by using appropriate software tools

however, Steve had trouble with the nikon .nef row files, and among those files he could read only a 2% were completely recovered. at first glance i was pleased to see that most of the chinese new year images i posted here were recovered. nowadays when i went back to arrange those files it turned out that among the files that have been saved some of them took a quite original artistic character that i would never be able to imagine of

my third reaction after the crash must be considered even more intelligent. i became a convert from pc to macintosh and i am doing regular backup since then

harmadik reakciómat a baleset után még intelligensebbnek kell elkönyvelni. áttértem ugyanis a pc-ről a macintosh-ra, és azóta rendszeresen lementem a file-jaimat

good luck with your mac then, i know at least as many people who lost their files on a mac as on a pc... and maybe half as many who felt they were save with whatever backup medium they used to store their pictures. :-) these things are virtually AND literally not made forever, not even for a lifetime. and come to think of it, that's really a good thing: how else should we advance out of the trash from our past and make space for the future, if we don't loose what we had? actually, i think the reaction of your recovery software could be considered the most intelligent. it scrambles your RAW files so nicely into very unique, artistically outstanding new oeuvres... admit it, you'd never have even thought of doing something so pretty yourself! :-) mawey · 2011-11-11: 06:45

YES!! Another one for 'our side' (Mac's)!! I seriously don't know how anyone creative can work without one. I will tell my story so you know even a Mac can have 'issues': I make my photos in to books using iPhoto... I make the book as I take shots so as to keep up with the task... this roughly means 2 books a year. Last week I had filled another book (300 photos) and was going to order before we move again next week. There were some empty pages that I didn't use so I went to delete them. I DELETED THE ENTIRE BOOK. I cried! I had to go back through 6000 (YES you read the correctly, six thousand) images looking for the 300 I had wanted to print.
