In Search of Critters

2008.04.25
Our outside journey began with a visit to the forgotten corner of the porch, where the robin nest is located. The nest was occupied at the moment by "mama robin", and she didn't seem to want to go anywhere, so I just let her be (didn't want her to hover in front of me and angrily peck at my face).

Well, mama robin eventually took flight, and baby robin #1 of 3 made an appearance (unfortunately, I didn't have any chewed worm to give the little tyke)...

Next stop was the air conditioner at the side of the house, where I found this fascinating winged creature. I was able to get pretty close to take the picture, because the fly wasn't moving as it was too windy to fly (at least I'm assuming, I didn't attempt it myself).

I know, this is a plant, not a creature. BUT, there is a little ant there, busily...doing something. Not sure WHAT he was doing, but he was sure doing it busily...

Well, our outdoor journey was cut short when Mr Bee here decided he'd seen enough of my ugly mug. I waited a little bit to try to get a bit closer and get some close-ups, but every time I thought I'd get one, another angry bee would swoop in from nowhere and they'd wrestle around in the air. Once three of them dive-bombed me, I decided I'd seen enough.

Of course, when I returned to the front door, I found this critter inside my house, wondering why I'd dared to go on an outdoor adventure without him. It's kind of hard to walk around and take pictures when you're leashed to a puppy that can physically pull you anywhere he wants to go.

Well, the softball game got rained out yesterday, which bummed me out, because the weather actually turned sunny a few hours before the game, but they said water was pooled on the field and we couldn't play *sigh*. Oh, well...it happens. At least the basement didn't flood again, for that I can be thankful (when I dreamt of an indoor swimming pool, it never had boxes and coolers floating around in it).

I resorted to wandering around my yard again looking for stuff to photograph. One thing I was looking for was critters, and while I did find a few, they weren't exactly of the terribly unique variety, but oh, well!

etodd80 Great set of critters, with excellent commentary :-) Is that the same nest that held the blue eggs last week? The fly-thing is a great macro, I'm surprised he stayed there long enough to shoot him. The bee shot is great too, totally focused on the bee, very nice!

gderuiter Predictably, I'm quite fond of the Robin's nest series you have here -- after seeing the beautiful blue eggs a few days ago, it is amazing to see the emergence of what they contained. I hope you get to photograph them daily! They change so fast!

ambersunsets Everyday critters make nice photographs, too. You will definitely have to keep us informed of the baby robins. At this stage, they're kind of gangly looking....
Sorry about your game, but I'm glad you don't have that pool.
BTW, your dog is adorable! What's his name and how old is he?

ncshutterbug Wow, what an awesome set! I love the baby robin, and that bee in flight is magnificent! I know bees are wonderful for what they do, but we have some carpenter bees and wasps that like to stalk me. Drives me crazy!
