Bye Bye Birdies

2008.05.09
My wife doesn't care much for this picture, she thinks the baby birds look kind of nasty, but I think it's kind of neat - this was taken the first day they were out of their shells (notice one had yet to hatch still at this point).

I posted this one the other day already, not too long ago even, but the "saga" seemed somehow incomplete without it here in the middle. This was one of the babies three or four days after hatching.

The youngsters just a little over a week after hatching. My, they do grow up fast, don't they? They always looked like they were frowning when I stopped by to visit.

This was the first of the bunch to fly out of the nest and wander around. Caught me by surprise because I was quiety sneaking outside to photograph them again and he was just flying up and out of the nest as I came out. I left briefly to go inside, and when I came back out, he'd taken off. The following day, his nest-mates had taken off as well.

The interesting thing is these are baby robins. They're old enough to fly, but the thing I didn't even notice right away is they don't have the signature "red breasts" yet. Guess that part takes a while to show up.

I haven't taken a lot of photos lately, things have just been crazy busy lately, and it's been pouring rain almost constantly which puts me in a mood not conducive to taking pictures. I did get some shots of the baby birds on my porch, but as of this moment, the nest has been empty for several days - they finally flew the "coop". I managed to get a shot of one of them right after he first flew up and out of the nest, too bad I didn't know he was going to fly for the first time or I might have caught him in action. So here's the "saga" of the birds as much as I was able to capture them. I hope to finally get around to looking at what everyone has posted lately, I never meant to give that up even with no pics of my own (like I said, crazy busy around here)...

sherryb too cute I love them, new life is always so precious. Great job on following them from egg to leaving the nest. These pictures remind me that soon my little bird will be leaving the nest too. She graduates in one week. Thanks Matt for the great post

Madoc This is the saga of life.
Truly great reportage you did here, Mat.
Personnally, I find no shot to be nasty in this set since it is all natural and makes the beauty of life shine.
Thanks for this, and I really hope that you'll get more time for photo since I love what you do.

etodd80 You did a great job capturing their first part of life. I agree with Branson, #1 is kinda nasty, but in a cool way :-) I like #2 a lot.
I agree with Madoc, I hope you aren't so busy soon because you do take great shots! Good luck getting rid of the rain, I know its very un-inspiring!

gderuiter I'm so glad you were able to follow their development! You remind me how honored I feel whenever an animal chooses my house as a preferred spot for nest-building. This is a wonderful series.

LotoFoto Great shots!
I have a shot of a similar bird I should post.
He was lying in the grass with a little blood near his beak.
I scooped him up with some tree bark, climbed a ladder & put him back in his nest. I didn't think he was ready to "fly the coop" just yet :)
