Watching the Cold Rush in

2008.12.13

Winter has always been the hardest time for me to get motivated to go out and shoot. That is why I have chosen to start a project for myself in order to keep me going through these cold times. I will let you all know what it is soon. But I think I am going to do it entirely in film using some of my new darkroom equipment. I know some will think this is taking a step backwards, but it is not. Some people praise the ability computers have in mimicking film. But there are things that digital can never mimic.

There is a mentality that is involved with using film. You treat each frame with care, knowing that their number is limited. Instead of shooting haphazardly, you go at each shot aiming to create the image in your mind. I find it increases the quality of my work. For me, that is priceless.

Cherax Yes, I know what you mean. It can be very lazy to just rattle off a few hundred digital pics without a thought, and hope that just one turns out. It's the sniper vs the machine gun. But when I'm trying hard, I do think carefully about each shot, but also experiment a lot with settings and composition.

Your shot conveys a sense of cold. I would like it aimed to the right a little, moving that vertical left in the frame, and reduce the background trees too.

Dragana i think that for the people who have no kids is the closest one can come to knowing what is it like, the anticipation, something coming out of the dark, pure alchemy. i am so looking forward to your new project

jenjung A friend of mine refuses to go digitial, he feels the same way. good luck on getting yourself out there on those cold days!

lynnsgallery2 Wonderful shot!!! I love the cold feel to it and distant background.
I never really took great shots with film so I admire people who do...and you’re one of those people. I don't really love winter but after the ice storm I was excited to get outside and start shooting. It was freezing but exhilarating to capture so much more than the gray that was out there before :))

Iwanowski I photograph on film a lot and still prefer it to digital. Good luck with the new project!

etodd80 Sounds like a great project. I think you are definitely right with regard to shooting digital haphazardly. Your post and words make me think about it a bit more. Good luck with your project.

szimonik i agree: film is much better! i always try to give a 'film-like' feel to my digital photographs... [not sure how much i succeed, but that's another story!]

i like the feeling of solitude reflected in this photo.

bundlesofjoy What a detailed and chilly shot. The shot has such solitude to it. Very nice how you made us feel the cold, not just see it. Well done.
