"I cannot believe you are buying another camera."

2008.12.22

My wife has to be one of the most patient people I know. Ever since I first fell in love with photography, I was in a whirlwind of buying lenses. Just a few months ago I had told her my camera equipment was complete. But now I realize that I didn't really need all of them. I just sold one of my L-series lenses to purchase another film camera.

Many people get into the habit of trying to have a lens for every focal length. Or getting the latest and greatest DSLR body. This can be a trap. This changes your mentality to focusing on what equipment you would use to make a "good" picture rather than focusing on making an image that actually has meaning.

Just look around. You will find images that are technically perfect. They have great composition, color, lighting and DOF, but they make you feel absolutely nothing inside. Other people will swear by this train of thought. I followed it once. But I have realized recently that an image does not need to be perfect. In fact sometimes if an image is "perfect" it could take away from the message you are trying to convey. Sometimes grain, blur, clipped people, flare and "bad" composition can add more to an image.

jenjung very true. sometimes technically perfect = dry and emotionally empty.

Your wife must be a very patient and understanding person! : )

etodd80 Very well said. I know I fall into that trap a lot. Have fun with your new toy!

LotoFoto Great insight.
I have to agree.
I've recently read & learned so much about photography that photos I once loved, I now see as flawed. Thanks for stating your views.
Also, these are very nice portraits of a lovely woman :)

Azrin I agree with you.
Some people got the misconception that the latest DSLR body or the latest lenses will help them get the best images. But they failed to understand that the term 'best' itself is subjective.

pollak i totally agree with you, if you don't have it inside , not even the greatest lens or camera will give it to you. the feeling i mean :)

pollak · 2008-12-23: 14:50
lynnsgallery2 Love the last one of Amanda!!! I'm glad for your statement because I am not "perfect" when it comes to photography. I never took a photography class in my life but I have a passion for it even if the shot isn't great it means something to me...and that's what counts :))
lynnsgallery2 · 2008-12-23: 22:11
meelas i agree. i believe you need an eye and an idea, the camera may just makes things "easier"
