Si nota, in questa epoca, una unità di fondo tra la musica rinascimentale e quella barocca, ma verso la fine del XVI secolo si evidenzia un cambiamento di stile significativo: lo si può vedere confrontando alcune delle ultime opere di Palestrina con quelle più mature di Monteverdi, in cui si nota una forte influenza dell'Umanesimo.
