Westvleteren: in search of the world's finest beer

2008.03.01
A map of the authentic trappist abbeys in Belgium. They all make their own beer. Westvleteren is on the left with the key and palm frawn symbol.

We drove through many hops fields on our search for St. Sixtus abbey in Westvleteren. It is sort of in the middle of nowhere. Not easy to find.

But alas we locate it.

Excitement arises as we get out of the car at St. Sixtus. Soon we will taste the world's best and most exclusive beer.

The walk to "In De Vrede" the cafe across from the abbey that serves the beer. The monks need to remain hidden.

Even the Belgian kitties come in search of the beer.

The monks understand how awesome they are. Apparently this news clipping does too.

Behold, Trappist Westvleteren 12, one of the three beers the monks brew. This one is widely considered the best beer in the world.

Luke, enjoying some conversations over the world's most exlusive beer.

Scott enjoying the beers pleasant "nose"

All good things do indeed end.

Several pictures in the Claustrum.

The group enjoying a video about the how the monks make the beer.

In front of the actual abbey, no entry for us.

Hoping to catch a glimpse of the monks going about their daily lives, we stare down this passage into the abbey.

We traveled to Belgium. We sought the "holy grail" of beer. And we succeeded.
