The Old Mountain Road to Cerisano

2007.08.04
Looking down at the town of Fiumefreddo Bruzio. The town where my grandmother was born. (My mother's mother)

The town church - Santa Maria

Looking north to the towns of San Lucido and Paola.

Finally reached the top of the mountain. We were in the clouds, not in fog.

Pulled over to look down into the town of Mendicino.

This is the Piazza in the center of the town of Mendicino. When we arrived at 12:50pm there were cars parked all over and a bunch of men sitting in front of the cafe.

The same Piazza at 1pm. The only ones left were us and the cop, and he was gone within minutes.

The cafe - also empty. Hey, it's time for pranzo (lunch) and a rest before getting back to work (or the cafe).

The street leading to the church.

Chiesa di San Sebastiano (Church of St. Sebastian) - the new church.

Saint Sebastian - the old church built around 1579. Notice the banner honoring the 500th anniversary of San Francesco di Paola (the patron saint of Calabria).

My 92 year old aunt Carmelina. She's active, energetic, has a memory that puts mine to shame and she cooked gnocchi and cannelloni for us - the best I've ever tasted.

My uncle Carmine. He's 90 and can still drink us under the table. We were drinking homemade grappa - he said it wasn't so strong, only 48% alcohol.

Leaving Fiumefreddo and taking the "old" road through the mountains toward Cerisano - the town where my father grew up and where my 92 year old aunt and 90 year old uncle (dad's siblings)still live. Very windy and very scenic.
