Queen of Sheba

2008.04.06
Perched majestically atop the porch of the front door, she is queen of all she surveys

Her baby was propagated from her cutting 6 months ago

Showy and flashy, they warm the soul and bring on the smiles when we open the door in the morning ...

... and when we say goodnight

Thick padded rosettes resembling clam shells

Leaf margins turn red in bright sunlight

Her botanic name is 'Kalanchoe luciae' –– also known as Desert Cabbage or Red Pancakes –– but we have nicknamed her Queen of Sheba because of her large, majestic rosettes.

Originally from South Africa, this evergreen succulent resembles clam shells because of the shape of her basal rosette. Her leaves are covered with a green-gray bloom and the leaf margins take on a reddish hue if grown in bright sunlight, as we have done.

Our Queen of Sheba needs very little maintenance, medium water needs, and is just as happy outdoors during our mild Mediterranean winters or under the hot Spanish sun.

thepictureman Nice composition, interesting flower. Funny, but # 2 and # 4 did not appear with the others. I wonder if this is my problem or yours ??

DancingDolphin A Queen that's not high maintenance... THAT'S a find! Actually around my house, if they're aren't low maintenance, they're dead! :-)

Beautiful set, really nice light!
