Out and about –– Benijofar

2008.05.12
The Church of St James, built originally in the 17th Century ...

... was largely rebuilt after the devastating 1829 earthquake which hit Benijofar and the surrounding area of Almoradi particularly

Opposite the Church is the Plaza de la Constitucion ...

... with its newly surfaced walkway, towering wood-and-steel sculptures, planter boxes and tall palm trees ...

... some looking like they have been in place for centuries

On the left is a newly built commercial-plus-residential centre

Straight ahead is another newly built commercial centre ...

... plus a block of posh apartments ...

... with views across a proposed golf course towards Formentera del Segura ...

... plus cafés where you can enjoy a meal al fresco ...

... or indoors if the day is too cool

Benijofar is a small village of only 5 km2, on the Southern Costa Blanca, located just 5 km inland from Guardamar del Segura. It adjoins the villages of Rojales, Formentera del Segura and the new town of Ciudad Quesada.

The history of Benijofar goes back to the Moorish occupation, and its name is thought to have been derived from the Arabic language.

Agriculture is the mainstay of Benijofar's economy and its produce supplies the fruit and vegetable markets throughout the region.
