During the slavery, from the 18 the to the end of the 19 th century, in this place, there was a mill. We can see the vestiges of the machine which served for crushing the sugar cane to obtain the juice which warmed in strong heat was transformed into sugar.

MidsummerSilence what an interesting tidbit of information. I love it when people include 'history lessons' with their photos. What a great shot and thanks again for the info!

miclaud Domino and Thiagotdi, this picture is taken in the ruins of the "Crève-Coeur plantation", in Sainte-Anne, south of my natve island, Martinique.
Domelia, I did not realize that I posted it on may 10th, the "national" memorial Slavery abolition .
(I put "brackets", because in Martinique, our Slavery abolition Day is on may 22nd)

jonrake nice photo and good history lesson. I've never been to your lovely island but visited many other Caribbean islands which have similar sugar mills/plantations worked by slaves. A reminder of the world's inhumanity.

It is quite amazing to see some of the equipment, though not in use, still in this location. Thank you for this very useful piece of information.

This place has not been visited since the end of its exploitation (beginning of 20th century) until 1990s.
miclaud · 2007-05-21: 06:46
Richard wow, looks like a magical place to visit.
Richard · 2007-05-22: 18:13
miclaud Yes, today, may 22nd, we did it, for the remembrance of the abolition of the slavery.
