hmmm..nvr. knew that:-) tell u the story/myth how varanasi came to be known as banaras? Some Britishers were wandering about on the streets of the city without knowing the name. They came before a shop where a husband and his wife was selling some kind of juice. They asked the shopkeeper," what's the name of this place?" Of course, the shopkeeper could not understand. Britishers repeated thequestion. the shopkeeper guessed they must be asking for juice, so he asked his wife, " Bana ras(prepare some juice.)" "O it is Banaras, thank you so much", said the Britishers and walked away leaving the ras and the ras wala/wali with their ras. :-)))

Really interesting set! Thanks for the additional information! Even if I am not a religious person, I strongly believe and admire the way religion, in contrast with modernity, generates identity, this is a clear example of this. Congratulations!
