Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico

2008.01.05
Typical Mexican architecture in this region, we often enjoyed our meals in the gardens of this hotel which was once the residence of a local business man.

El Acuaducto--the aquaduct--was functional for many years but is no longer. Because the city's known for this miles-long structure which winds its way throughout the city, it has been very nicely maintained. I shot the photo from the front porch of Hotel Acuaducto, in the heart of this magnificent city.

On our first day in Morelia, we visited the school where we'd be teaching. This day was the Mexican holiday Dia de la Bandera--Flag Day--and the children were assembled for their daily assembly. For the holiday, the children performed several special presentations--musical and theatrical--to teach the gringos about their holiday. We numbered nearly 40 in our group. Because of my particular program concentration, I did not teach at this school--instead, I was placed at a school out in la colonia (the ghetto) where I worked with children with special needs. One thing I will always remember about this particular school--all the teachers must pay for their own uniforms, which they are required to wear to school daily. They earn the equivalent of $500 monthly as teachers in this facility, one of the city's nicest and most parentally-sought-after educational communities

As part of my M.A. degree program, I had the opportunity to reside in this heavenly Mexican city. Morelia is the capital of the state of Michoacan. A beautiful Colonial Era city, Morelia's climate is, in my opinion, perfect--75-80 degrees F. during the day with very low humidity; this is very different from southeastern Michigan's swamp-like conditions. I cannot wait to return to this fantastic city.
