What We Did On Our Summer Vacation

One way up to the Settlement is off I-75 to K-92 then up 1595--a twisty, winding mountain road which yields beautiful views.

O one-way até o estabelecimento está fora de I-75 a K-92 então acima de 1595--uma estrada twisty, enrolando da montanha que renda vistas bonitas.

Upon arrival at the Settlement, the sign indicates a welcome to all. HenSett was founded in 1925. Hiram Frakes, a UM Pastor from a town at the base of the mountain (Pineville), was intrigued by a criminal trial in the P'ville court which was allegedly committed by a resident of what was then known as South America (now Frakes). After many visits and getting to know the people of South America, community members began donating their much-loved land to "Parson Frakes" so he could begin a school to educate the children of the mountain area. The building you see in the background was the school now serving as a community center. Modern transportation and buses have made it "easier" for the children attend schools.

Em cima da chegada no estabelecimento, o sinal indica uma boa vinda a tudo. HenSett foi fundado em 1925. Hiram Frakes, um Pastor do UM de uma cidade na base da montanha (Pineville), intrigued por uma experimentação criminal na corte de P'ville que foi cometida alegada por um residente de o que foi sabido então como Ámérica do Sul (agora Frakes). Depois que muitas visitas e conhecer os povos de Ámérica do Sul, membros de comunidade começaram doar seu muito-foram a terra “Parson Frakes” assim que poderia começar uma escola a educar as crianças da área da montanha. O edifício que você vê no fundo era a escola que serve agora como um centro de comunidade. O transporte e as barras-ônibus modernos fizeram “mais fácil” para as crianças de atender a escolas.

This building houses a senior care ministry (meals, fellowship, transportation to-from grocery stores/medical appointments, etc), a resale shop (on which the community depends a great deal), food pantry, emergency bill assistance, community library (a very busy place!), an infant health program, and summer and after school recreation and literacy program.

Uma vista do centro de comunidade do alto da montanha e no estabelecimento. Este edifício abriga um ministry sênior do cuidado (refeições, fellowship, transporte à-das lojas do mantimento/nomeações médicas, etc.), uma loja do resale (em qual a comunidade dependa bastante), pantry do alimento, auxílio da conta da emergência, biblioteca da comunidade (um lugar muito ocupado!), um programa infantil da saúde, e verão e após a recreação da escola e o programa do literacy.

The Mission Dorm is where the groups reside. Built by volunteers in the mid-1990's, this air-conditioned facility houses guests (up to 160 people), and is outfitted with showers, bunk-beds, wi-fi, a conference, living area, and a consignment shop (run by a community member) where local artisans can sell their crafts.

O dormitório da missão é onde os grupos residem. Construído por voluntários no mid-1990, esta facilidade air-conditioned abriga convidados (acima a 160 povos), e é equipada com chuveiros, beliche-camas, wi-fi, uma conferência, área viva, e uma loja do consignment (funcionamento por um membro de comunidade) onde os artisans locais podem vender seus ofícios.

Frakes Community Park, directly across from the HenSett sign, hosts a pool, tennis court, basketball court, and a brand new 1/5 mile walking/jogging loop. This park is well-used by the community.

O parque da comunidade de Frakes, diretamente transversalmente do sinal de HenSett, hospeda um pool, uma corte de tênis, uma corte de basketball, e laço andando/movimentando-se de uma 1/5 de milha brandnew. Este parque é bem-usou-se pela comunidade.

Every morning we attend daily devotions at 7 a.m. on this hillside. A work camp group built benches on the hillside. Prior to benches, we sat on rocks placed on the ground, so it's nice to sit up off the wet grass in the morning.

The Frakes Community School is located adjacent to HenSett but is no longer an official part of the S'ment. However, the S'ment is an active partner in education before, during and after school.

Each year thousands of people from across the United States visit the southeastern region of Kentucky, the heart of the Appalachian Mountain region. People are drawn there for many reasons and with the primary focus of spending a week at work camp. Groups pay $185 per person for room and board and then select a community project based on their group's budget and skill levels. Henderson Settlement, a mission organization of the United Methodist Church, is situated on Pine Mountain in the bustling community of Frakes--right at the top of the mountain. Population of Frakes--about 30. Going out into the hollers (the "backwoods" part of the areas--well off the beaten path) provides numerous opportunities to provide much-needed home repairs. Once the community folks come to know the work campers, life-long friendships are made with returning groups going out to visit the homes of projects from many years past to pay a visit to the homeowners. My Special Guy asked to join me in my annual trip (because groups of all sizes are invited to come individuals and more, regardless of church affiliation), it made the trip even more special. Todos os anos milhares de povos através da visita de Estados Unidos a região de Kentucky, o coração do southeaster da região Appalachian da montanha. Os povos são extraídos lá para muitas razões e com o foco preliminar de gastar uma semana no acampamento do trabalho. Os grupos pagam $185 por a pessoa pelo quarto e a placa e selecionam então um projeto da comunidade ao baseado em níveis do orçamento e de habilidade do seu grupo. It's interesting to see photos of this place after hearing about it for years! The community center building looks (and sounds) like quite the hub of activity for the place. Good that your SG could go along and share the time!
