Painting of Valery Chkalov at the Pearson Airfield. In 1936 and 1937, he participated in several ultra long flights, including a 63-hour flight from Moscow, Soviet Union to Vancouver, Washington, United States via the North Pole on an Tupolev ANT-25 plane (June 18–20, 1937), a non-stop distance of 8,811 kilometres (5,475 mi). The flight pioneered the polar air route from Europe to the American Pacific Coast. This Airfield is still in use today.

Awesome, awesome AWESOME! I wish I had known this was the theme. There are some very cool murals around here too. I'm always a step behind it seems.

There was no hope of me getting anything on this theme this week.... there is nothing remotely 'mural' like in my village... these are fantastic! i love the first one, just amazing

The photo of downtown Vancouver was taken in Feb 1951, and the guy in the middle of the young men walking under the sign is my dad, Frank Springer Sr.

A side note to this is that my dad bought this same photo at the Marsh's museum in long beach because he thought it was neat and brought back memories of his home town, it wasn't until two years later that it dawned on him that he was actually in the picture! He's walking home with school chums & is looking at the camera wondering what was going on at the time.
