Wind River Canyon lies between Shoshoni and Thermopolis, Wyoming, and is a spectacular display of geology from the Pre-Cambrian Era (600 million years ago) to present. It's truly stunning in any season (my daughters and I experienced a whitewater rafting trip during the summer a few years ago that was terrific). My newlywed parents were involved in a car accident in Wind River Canyon almost 50 years ago, before guard rails were installed. Icy weather caused them to slide over the edge and plummet to the river. My mother was thrown from the car half way down, but my father didn't know it, and just the thought of him searching frantically for her when he reached the water, battered and bloody, sends shivers through me, even now.
