Thermopolis

2007.04.05

I traveled to Thermopolis today for work (about 50 miles away). Thermop (as we locals call it) is home to Hot Springs State Park, established in 1896 and has been identified as the largest mineral hot springs in the world.

The "Tepee Fountain" pictured above was started in 1903 by piping hot mineral water through a vertical pipe built into a rock pyramid. As the water exits the top and flows over the structure, it cools and deposits travertine. The algae within the water colors the deposits.

lamoon53 Thank you for adding an extra measure of understanding to your photograph. The most wonderful part about participating in photoblog, for me at least, is the connections I can make with people all over the world and even some in my own back yard. Now to see if I can figure out where Thermopolis is...

lamoon53 LOL, if I'd have noticed your tag I could have figured it out faster. Silly me. Thanks for sharing this place though and I hope you'll post more Wyoming shots.

Jannie Wow! This is fabulous! Travertine is an incredible substance. I've seen it in Grand Canyon forming some incredible shelves in Havasu Canyon. #1 is mind-boggling!
