Pine cones are nature's
Magic when Fibonacci
Numbers fall from trees.

~ Deborah Stark

While browsing the Internet today, I was astonished to read the following:

Pick up a pinecone and count the spiral rows of scales. You may find eight spirals winding up to the left and 13 spirals winding up to the right, or 13 left and 21 right spirals, or other pairs of numbers. The striking fact is that these pairs of numbers are adjacent numbers in the famous Fibonacci series: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21. . . . Here, each term is the sum of the previous two terms. The phenomenon is well known and called phyllotaxis.

Who knew pinecones were so interesting?

MHJphotos Okay ... I must admit to counting things ... everything actually. Lines in the road, telephone poles, number of lugnuts, birds on wires, etc. But, I have NEVER counted the rings on a cone, and had no idea that it was a Fibonacci sequence! This is wonderful! Now, I have something else to count!

soldotnamanda Who knew indeed. We not only get to see amazing pictures . . . but we get a little education too. Thanks!

lindzlou Nice shot! If you enjoy facts like that, you should check out a book called "The Golden Ratio" by Mario Livio. It's a lot of math (which I like because I'm a bit of a math nerd), but lots of interesting stuff about math and nature, including pine cones, sea shells, sunflowers, as well as parallels with art, architecture, aesthetics, and more. Or you could just google the golden ratio :-)
