Watchful

2007.12.22

May the alert and the watchful divinities guard thee, may he that sleeps not and nods not guard thee, may he that protects and is vigilant guard thee! ~ Atharva Veda

We woke up to over a foot of fresh snow yesterday morning (and it snowed most of yesterday, too, for even more accumulation). Hannah noticed this bird in the tree in our backyard, tucked in against the cold. What I wouldn't have given for at least a 300mm lens! This was the best I could do with my paltry 135. =) From this distance I couldn't tell if it was a hawk or a golden eagle (I'm leaning toward hawk - SheriJ, can you tell?).

youlookmahvelous Beautiful none the less. The definition of the bird is not what makes this a great shot in my minds eye. Great job!

dweiskir Very beautiful. I wouldn't mind a little of that snow. It's been quite a while since we've had a good snow fall, and I miss it.

DancingDolphin I'm thinking hawk also.... I saw a golden eagle up close and personal once and he didn't have this much white on his chest. Either way birds of prey are SO cool, it's always thrilling to see them. Good eye Hannah and great shot mom!

signsnwonders Lovely photo.Captures the mood of the bird, often seen after a heavy snowfall. And your mystery bird stands out well against the sky, despite the distance.

MHJphotos This is awesome! Agree with dkelly ... I could easily see this on tomorrow's front page. I too love birds of prey - I wish that they would come visit MY Backyard.

Definitely a hawk to my eye ... I'll keep searching the web ...

CatsEyes 300mm lense or not, it is still beautiful. Lonely but beautiful. The snow gives it such an atmosphere. Merry Christmas.

Cherax That's great. Would look really good as a B&W too.

soldotnamanda For such a spotaneous moment your composition and light are lovely. I'm going with a hawk. . . but verdict is still out until SheriJ sees it.
soldotnamanda · 2007-12-23: 23:55
jwideman that's a beautiful shot!
jwideman · 2007-12-24: 20:48
Jannie I say hawk. Can't say which one, but the profile is very hawk shaped. Great shot!! Hope you get a 300mm for Christmas! If not, go buy your own!
Jannie · 2007-12-24: 23:33
SheriJ Looks like a type of Red Tail Hawk an Eastern Juvenile Borealis.
Hard to tell from this distance. For sure a Hawk.WOW what a great find though. Would be nice to have that 300mm eh?
