The influence of music is far greater than you can imagine.
While walking around Doom Island, Irian Jaya I met with a group of boys preparing for an inter village b-boy competition. The camera proved to be a motivating tool as they challenged each other move by move while pleading that I capture shots of them in action.
Before I arrived they were practicing barefoot on sand. But for the camera, as an act of formality one of the kids ran home to retrieve their official red chequered mat, proud, he unrolled the mat to unleash a frenzy of acrobatic moves, from then onwards it was an amazing 1 hour show, one after the other.
Stripped down to the core, they didnt have the snazzy clothes or the bling-bling. It really didnt seem to matter. Even if took months, passed on by word of mouth, island to island, music in the form of hip-hop culture reached this little corner of the earth.
