My favorite Things

2008.08.31
I can't live without music, but I cannot live without books either. Here are some of my favorite ones. There's one book that I absolutely love: Mariama Ba's Une Si Longue Lettre/ So Long a Letter, but I just gave it to someone dear and I don't have a copy with me for now. Une Si Longue Lettre helped me understand Senegalese culture a lot and was quite eye-opening for me during the time I lived in Senegal.

I find myself reading The Alchemist about once a year b/c I find it inspiring and there's always something new to learn.

I never knew that comic books could be so powerful until I read Maus, a book in which the author describes his parents' experiences during the Holocaust.

In L'Etoile Noire, I learned about other victims of the Holocaust that one never hears or reads about. After reading it, I thought about Ousmane Sembene's movie Camp de Thiaroye, an excellent film about the experiences of returning African soldiers after WWII.

In Zenzele, a Zimbabwean mother tells her daughter about the values she wants to transmit her and about the experiences that shaped her life. A universal story.

If you are looking for a few good books, I suggest these.
