Taken at around 7:30 this morning, just after daybreak. This guy was at the top of the oak tree behind our house, about 35-40 feet up, and about 50 or 60 feet from where I took this picture.
|
Not the sharpest picture, but since I've only seen him once before, and he's so far away, any picture is a good one for me. He's a pileated woodpecker, and about 15 to 20 inches long. His hammering is so loud I could hear it from inside the house, with no windows open.
|
Not a good shot by any stretch of the imagination, but it gives you an idea of his wing span.

That bird is huge? Were you taking the shot from the back deck?

He most definitely is huge! I took the shot from my bathroom window. He was so high in the tree that you couldn't see him unless you crouched low and looked up.

Cool! I saw one (or another similarly large woodpecker) once in the park, before I had my good camera. You're right about the LOUD. I thought someone was using a nailgun. The little downy woodpeckers I see in our yard sound like someone rapping their fingernails on a table.
