New Kid in Town

2008.04.24
I was watering the plants early this morning, and noticed the bluebirds were really active. Unable to resist, and willing to risk being late for work, I grabbed my camera and started shooting. Suddenly, this little guy flew out of nowhere, and landed on Kevin's weather station, which just above the bluebird box, on the same post.

I was stunned! I knew immediately that this was an indigo bunting. I had never even heard of them until a few months ago, when my friend Lorina (lorinalynn here on Photoblog) mentioned them to me. Since Lorina lives in Pennsylvania, I assumed that they didn't live in my neck of the woods. I'm so glad I was wrong! Isn't he gorgeous? He's related to the cardinal, which makes sense - he looks like a bright blue cardinal. (This is a crop, please pardon the fuzziness.)

"You and I will get along just fine, as long as you stay away from my babies."

"Oooh, is that what's down there? Don't worry - I'm not here to hurt them!"

And with that, he was gone. I hope I see more of him!

majikmonkee Amazing! I was thinking the same thing, that that looked like a blue cardinal (ironically, here by St Louis, we see lots of cardinals around). Very pretty, excellent catch! Thanks for sharing!

lorinalynn I think he's just showing up the bluebirds. "Huh. You think you're blue!"

He's as beautiful as I remember them being. I haven't seen one in years, since new houses sprung up in the empty fields near my parents' house.
