Insert Politician Joke Here

2008.05.06
I was relaxing on the porch with Sugar, watching in amazement as two young squirrels came up close to the porch for some corn, completely unafraid of us. Sugar was standing at the rail, about five feet away, still as a statue, just watching. Eventually they had their fill, and scampered off. Kevin was inside, watching all of this through the front window.

I was walking towards the door to go in, and was just about to reach down to pick up my watering can and trowel. I saw it at the same moment Kevin said it - "Snake!"

He was four feet long or more, and had slithered up the front steps while Sugar and I were watching the squirrels. The funny thing is - I have a horrible fear of ticks, as well as wasps, bees, and the like. I will freak out if I find a tick on me, and run away from bees. When I saw this snake, Kevin was all ready to comfort me, asking, "Are you ok?"

My response was, "Yes! I've got to go get my camera!"

Kevin thinks I'm weird. He may be right. :)

This is a black racer, and they're pretty common around here. They're not venomous, and not aggressive. In fact, they're usually very afraid of humans, and will take off really fast when they encounter one of us. For some reason, this one was absolutely still. I was moving all around him, trying to get pictures at every angle (and pretty close, even though I had a zoom), and he stayed put. I wanted a picture of his forked tongue, but he wouldn't cooperate.

Yesterday's post was about a politician, and today's post about a snake. It's only natural to compare the two. :)

DancingDolphin Cool shots!

So I have to tell you my favorite snake story. When my son was about 5 we were on a picnic out in the woods in Pennsylvania. He was off a few feet by himself and said, "Mommy, look at the big worm." It was a huge Black Rat Snake, about 5 feet long. Yep, BIG worm! :-)

Peche Oooooohhh, snakes intrigue me and I love these shots and the commentary for educating me a little bit more - wonderful shot in the third... in the second through, I love how the snake is all wrinkly in bits... have you ever held one? They feel soo weird - almost like they're not touching your skin but they are... lol too hard to explain!
Peche · 2008-05-07: 01:39
tbranscum Oh I hate snakes. I am so afraid of them. I have heard stories about racer snakes, don't know how true they are. I will never forget them.

BreezyOnTheEyes creepy!!!! i would've ran away like your total typical girl. i used to play out in the woods all the time when i was younger, and of course there were snakes, but as soon as i SAW one, i would book back to the house as fast as i could...like it was chasing me lol ridiculous. i'd probably do the same thing still! good shots! you're a brave woman! hehe

btw who is Sugar? we have a cat named Sugar Foot that we call Sugar ^_^
BreezyOnTheEyes · 2008-05-08: 21:14
LastFrontier Man o' man, I'm glad we don't have snakes up here. No, wait. We do have now-infamous politicians. One called the internet a set of tubes, and the IRS is looking at most of the snakes, er, pols for connections to Big Oil.
LastFrontier · 2008-05-08: 22:35
TheCrazyCroat I'd die. That is one BIG snake!
