Luna Moth

2008.05.09
Without flash.

With flash.

One with flash, one without. I can't decide which I like better. (I almost never like flash.)

Last night I let the dogs out in the backyard one last time before bed. I don't normally go outside with them at that time, and I also don't usually turn on the light that's just outside the door, to keep bugs from coming in.

Last night I not only stepped outside with them, but I also left the light on. A minute or two later I hear the sound of a bug flapping against the window, but much louder than normal. I turned around and saw this beauty. It was absolutely gorgeous, and huge - about five inches across.

I'd never seen one before, but I knew what it was. After reading a bit about them, I feel lucky to have seen one at all, for they only breed up to three times per year (where I live), only fly at night, and only live for about a week.

Special thanks to Sheldon for identifying yesterday's bird! It's a female summer tanager.

debbyfaye Pretty, pretty, pretty!

LostAspen Ooooh! Wonderful! I think I like the flash a little better, the one without has a lot of yellow/orange to it.

LotoFoto Oh how cool is that??!
I am most definitely voting for 'without flash'.
I'm a natural light kinda gal myself :)

Beagles3 The second one has a vibrant green.

GnatBytes Neat looking moth and great photos!

lorinalynn I think I like the first one. I like the shadows.

My brother once caught a luna moth, and took it to my parents' house to show my mom. They oohed and awwed, then let it go. They watched it fly up, up, up... then get gulped up by a bird.

Oops.

dkelly i like both shots for different reasons , i like the golden light in the first and the color and detail in the second shot
dkelly · 2008-05-09: 22:21
japarker Very interesting study. I"m glad that you posted both. I like the first one better - it seems more real somehow. :)

BreezyOnTheEyes ooooooo i used to have a total THING for luna moths. they are incredibly beautiful. i would die to get some shots of one.

i'm like you with the flash, i almost never like it. sometimes it's just necessary. like these both for the different attributes they each emphasize. i'm favoriting them! great find!!
BreezyOnTheEyes · 2008-05-10: 00:39
JuliaGotz In this instance, I like the flash - the bluer light, and the tail work better for me, though I see you lose something of the body. what a creature!
JuliaGotz · 2008-05-10: 09:16
Lindyart I like the without flash and in so ways I always like w/o flash because it seems to wash things out.. but Julia made some great points also ..:)

Frenchies Great macro ! I prefer the one with the flash... love the white background !!!
Frenchies · 2008-05-10: 12:07
wagz98 Wow, how cool its amazing nature is...and how this beautiful insect only lives about a week what a shame. I like them both but am leaning towards the flash photo.
wagz98 · 2008-05-10: 19:52
KerBear I don't like moths at all... and to be quite honest they freak me out a little but this moth is actually quite beautiful!! I don't know if I can pick a favorite between the two of them either....
KerBear · 2008-05-11: 11:55
ambersunsets I like the first shot best.
Great capture!
ambersunsets · 2008-05-11: 14:40
PaperWings I like the first one, too. I never knew a moth could be so pretty! Nicely done.
PaperWings · 2008-05-11: 20:37
Peche Wow.
Lissa, this is awesome! Straight to faves. These little beauties are incredibly hard to capture.
For me, no flash shot is better, but I'm like you in that I rarely like using the flash and find the lighting too stark (but perhaps I am really yet to learn how to use a flash well!).
