View from the bottom of the hill. It's a looong way up there!
The memorial is 60 ft. high, and the hill it sits on is 90 ft. high. The base is inscribed, "In commemoration of the conquest of the air by the brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright conceived by genius achieved by dauntless resolution and unconquerable faith." The words wrap around the base of the monument.
The view from the top of the hill. The sand dune in the distance is Jockey's Ridge. In the distance, a biplane approaches.
The biplane circled the memorial.
Looking down at the location of the actual first flights. The two buildings are replicas of the shacks they had constructed - one of them the world's first airplane hangar. The granite markers indicate the distances of the first four flights. Oh, how far we've come since then.
It says it all.
View from another side of the memorial. It was so incredibly windy there. The constant wind is the reason the Wright Brothers chose this location for their attempts at flight.
The steepest part of the climb to the top. Fortunately, the wind was behind us.

What a very cool set - I had no clue they had a memorial set up to them but now that I have seen it and thought about it, it quite obviously makes sense! :) Great shots!!
