75 Years Young

2008.07.01
1936 - three years old. I love the bow, but most of all, I love the smile.

Four years old, with her cousin David. She doesn't look as happy here - but I love the eyes.

21 years old, at Drew University.

College graduation.

Engagement portrait. The double-heart brooch was made from my great-great-great grandparents' wedding rings, and was featured on a previous entry. I wore this same brooch on my wedding day.

August 20, 1955. What a nice couple!

1957 (or early 1958), holding my sister, Marianne.

1962, in front of their house in Allentown, Pennsylvania. They built the house themselves, and it was still under construction. I'm the brand-new baby Mom's holding. :) My sister is in the blue dress on the right with my Dad. With them are my aunt, uncle and three cousins - one of whom obviously liked my feet. :)

Christmas Day, 1966. I'm the blonde. :)

Summer 1967. Stewart Beach, Galveston, Texas. I remember Mom's hat. She was one fashionable lady - and still is. :)

I think this was the same year, but I'm not sure. I'm loving the sunglasses!

One of my favorite pictures of my parents. The car is a 1966 Plymouth Valiant station wagon. They kept that car forever - until it became too difficult to get parts for it. I took my driving test in that car, in 1979 - and as my family is all too happy to tell, I also hit the post in the garage coming home from that same driving test.

Mom has always been a great gardener. When I was young she used to grow so many tomatoes, she would let me sell them to our neighbors for a dime each. I'd load up a basket and go from door to door in our neighborhood.

There was one particular tomato that was bigger, redder and prettier than all the rest. Little did I know that Mom was saving it for us. I was so proud of it, I couldn't wait to sell it. Oops!

Mom and Dad in Hawaii, probably in the early 1980s. They went to Hawaii for the first time on their 25th anniversary in 1980, and loved it so much they went back five more times.

Still gorgeous in a bathing suit!

Another of my favorite pictures of them. This was sometime in the 80s, but I'm not sure which year. This was typical of them - always a loving couple.

In our beloved Texas bluebonnets, near Bellville, Texas. They built a house and retired to Bellville in the 90s.

Mom on our front porch, taken last fall. Still as beautiful as ever!

Today is my Mom's 75th birthday. She's an amazing woman, and someone I look up to. She raised me to be a strong, independent woman, and I hope I've lived up to it. I hope she knows how very grateful I am for being there for me, even when I've been extremely difficult. Especially then.

Happy birthday, Mom. I love you. :)

pattyb Yes, Happy Birthday! What a beautiful woman inside and outside, her eyes give away her kind spirit. Every one of these is just fantastic. We always had a station wagon, I love seeing the tailgate down, that just says 'picnic'!

Beautifully done...

gderuiter Our parents are the same age, and it's fascinating to me to see how many of the photographs from your albums approximate certain ones in my own. I'd love to show you what I mean. The cat glasses, the plaid maxi skirt, the short-haired sisters -- even the body positions. Amazing. This is a wonderful tribute. Happy Birthday to your mom.
