istanbul - the first day

2008.05.06
i woke up and went up to the terrace for breakfast. this is the view.

köfte: the greasiest meat i have ever eaten that hasn't been deep fried in something. and some good pickles.

i ate the lettuce which is kind of something you don't want to do because it might make you sick, but i wanted to eat it so i did. i didn't get sick either! i feel strong like ox. ox with tenacious cough.

an inscription on the mosque. what it says, i could not tell you.

the courtyard of the incredible blue mosque.

through tasseled lace curtains and iron grillwork, the blue mosque. the köfte were a little too greasy, but the view was absolutely worth it.

we approach the mosque. i wish i knew what the inscriptions say. the calligraphy is beautiful but i'm sure their meanings are even more beautiful.

the interior of the blue mosque, a little blurry. the mosque was absolutely amazing, well, as you can see. to go in you have to take off your shoes, and the entire floor is carpeted. you carry your shoes through with you (if you're a tourist) in a plastic bag, it's a very convenient system. i would have loved to go in while prayers were going on, but they won't let tourists in then.

side gallery of the mosque, where they hold things like prayer meetings and lessons.

just incredible.

dear tiles:
i want you. please come home with me.
thanks.

good and evil tulips.

i'z in ur bazin, drinkn ur naazty watur, givn u mangy stray cat dizeezez.

beautiful 19th-century cemetery... that had a tea garden in it.

these dudes asked me to take their picture. so i did. so here you are, waiter guys, on the internet!

LAMPS. i love them. i bought one. i wish i could buy all of them.

corn. i want it. but every time i walk past i'm on my way to eat or just ate. but it smells delicious every time i walk through sultanahmet park or the hippodrome. which is often.

turkish boy and girl scouts?

i think what my mom has for pottery i have for lamps. unfortunately i share her textile addiction.

antique ottoman jewelry in the bazaar.

YES PLEEZ LADY I HAZ TIKITS TO DERVISH SHOW.

were in ur bazaar
fietin on ur tables in packs.

textiles in the bazaar........ OMG TEXTILES.

cafes in the bazaar.

the height of turkish fashion... for what occasion would you ever wear this?

a little more understated.

so this is istanbul. things about istanbul:
1. there are flocks of stray cats
2. there are even more carpet dealers
3. the carpet dealers try to charge you ridiculous prices
4. but the pottery sellers are worse
5. meze is pretty much the best thing ever.
6. you get woken up at 4:30 am by a whiny singing man from a PA system... and it's not actually that annoying.
7. the women in headscarves seem a little more comfortable and happy walking down the street than the women in italy... and the larger ones are much more attractive because they don't have their jeans falling halfway down their butts.
8. they seem to be obsessed with tulips
9. and fleecing tourists
10. YES please lady!
