cappadoccia, meaning "land of the beautiful horses" from the ancient greek katpatukya, is more remarkable for its bizarre rock formations that take the form of camels, whirling dervishes, mushrooms, people, trees, pretty much anything you could imagine. our hotel was remarkable, situated among the so-called fairy chimneys of the town of göreme, had an outstanding view of the valley. at night they light up the rock formations like they do the monuments in florence, and you can sit out on the terrace of the hotel (if it isn't too cold, which it was when i was there) and drink your çay and listen to the whining but somehow beautiful chanting of the qur'an echo off thousands of cone-shaped rocks.
