Even Chinatown is experiencing a recession. Or someone really likes W, which is rare these days.

A common sight of my childhood. I'd be driving down the I-5 with my mom, and see a pair of sneakers tied together and flung over a stoplight. "Mom, what are those shoes doing there?" "Oh, some cholos probably beat up some gangster and took his shoes and threw them over a stoplight to mock him." "Oh. That's mean." "Yes, Laura, it is mean."

Because a pollo vivo is definitely better than a pollo muerto, especially if you want fresh dinner. i think you can also get other adorable animals such as pigeons, pheasants, rabbits, and turtles here. yum.

The pure kitsch that is Chinatown and its love of the red lantern and fake pagoda roof. It's why I love going.

The bejeweled Guad (or Virgin of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas/ Empress of America and Queen of Mexico/ Protectress of Unborn Children in Missouri - she has many arbitrary titles and powers and duties, the archetypal modern woman). I will make one of these shrines for my home.

i have now been home for an entire month. i did a few things when i got home. first and foremost, i slept. secondly, i pined. thirdly, i took the bus to downtown LA and took some pictures, here they are. not too artsy, i think maybe there's some psychological thing about being a tourist and feeling entitled (or obligated, even) to take bajillions of pictures. when you're in your hometown, you're so used to everything that you don't see little things that are new and exciting, or photograph worthy. i think part of the connection between tourists and taking obscene numbers of photographs is the novelty. when things are novel, they are more exciting to capture and remember. when things are remembered daily as you see them on your commute, the desire to record them fades. until you get over them as unique events and see them as compositions of forms, shapes and lines and colors and textures, which is when they regain their photo-worthiness.
also a lot of the shops on olvera street have angry signs demanding that passersby not photograph their goods, no doubt in the effort of preserving their "unique" ideas. i'm sorry, but if you don't want me to reproduce your besparked virgin of guadalupe, you're SOL because i want one myself now and will probably make one.
also my lovely father bought me an olympus e-volt 510! i was like (and still am like), WHOA thanks, dad! so expect future greatness?
