the intertidal

2009.05.27
the white dots on the starfish are nodes that prevent other organisms from attaching themselves to the starfish.

this sea anenome's distinctive green coloring is due to the single-celled green algae that lives symbiotically inside the anenome. the algae gets protected from herbivoracious grazers, and the anenome gets a digestive aid.

the sea anenome's mouth is also its anus. fascinating...

this starfish was about a foot tip to tip.

nature is amazing.

the tidepools at natural bridges state beach in santa cruz, ca are host to some amazing organisms. so much so that i almost want to ditch art school and become a marine biologist. almost, not quite.
