Loyalty Day Parade
2008.05.03
It was cold and windy (29 mph gusts!). Pam is holding my chair because if she didn't it very well might blow away in a wind gust. Gotta love the coastal weather.

I think the Mounted Posse is just an excuse for guys to play with guns and ride horses. Sounds cool to me!

Sometimes at events like this, my co-religionists (or fellow Christians), embarrass me a bit. Are they doing any good, getting the message out, or just giving cause for people to think of all Christians as a bit ... odd? "I really underestimated the creepiness."

What's the deal with the wheel? My Bible doesn't say anything about a wheel on the cross. [Again, I ask, "What's the point of this?"]

Cool custom mod of this car. It's quite odd, but unless you were there to hear the bagpipes blasting "Amazing Grace" from the on-board speakers, you can't get the full effect ....

Part of the Loyalty Days festival was this Field of Honor Memorial. It was very impressive.

On the first Saturday in May Newport celebrates "Loyalty Days" with several special events, including a parade on Saturday.
"Loyalty Day" is a hold over from the Cold War era -- it was to counter world-wild Socialist and Communist celebrations on May 1. Now, Newport is not a particularly conservative community, so it's always surprised us at just how much this patriotic event is celebrated. Granted, the anti-war Code Pink(o) had a large entry at the end of the parade, yet we also saw representatives of most branches of the US military.
Anyway, here are the pictures.
